Why locking is required in Column Pipes or Riser Pipes

locking system in column pipe and riser pipe

Pipe and coupling assembly is connected through square threads. These threads take the load and have low opening & closing torque.

During Installation and uninstallation: The torque is applied and due to the opposite nature of threads one tends to open while the other tends to close.

During pump operation :

Case I – Starting torque, Operation torque, Closing torque. When the pump starts or stops the torque is applied and that can lead to opening up of pipe & couple assembly.

Case II– Reverse torque due to change of phase incase the reverse torque o\is applied due to phase change the pipe can open.

Differences between Vinyl column pipe & Ashirvad column pipe :

S.no Vinyl Ashirvad
1. Vinyl power lock is made of Nylon 66 aerospace engineering grade plastic and has a square profile. Ashirvad lock is made of Aluminium and is circular in appearance cross sectionally.
2. Due to its square nature it takes the load, torque and jerk and still won’t slip Since the lock is circular in nature, it does not take the load that efficiently and slips and spoils threads.
3. Vinyl coupler assembly has 4 sealing points. Beside the 2 O-rings it has LPR and Power lock. These 4 sealing points ensure 100%  leak proof pipes. Ashirvad has 2 sealing points. The O-rings can get worn out with passage of time and cannot assure leakage.
4. The LPR is thick in appearance therefore it has a larger surface area for contact and It does not have LPR but two thin O-rings.
5. Vinyl pipes are stress free since enough space is left for limited movement,to rotate during torque. This not lets the stress build up and increases the load bearing capacity in the long term. The torque tends to build stress and reduce the strength of the threads.
6. Power Lock is the additional load bearing member. Lock is the weakest point in Ashirvad since the undercut of the Ashirvad pipe is as much as or more than the thread. Vinyl undercut is less than the undercut of the thread making it a strongest point against failure.
7. Vinyl pipes are reparable and can be serviced anytime one needs. One will have to pull out the lock and change the O-rings and the pipes are ready for the next tenure. Ashirvad pipes are not repairable once its O-rings get damaged.
8. In case the customer wants to have another lock. A second power lock can be added. In Ashirvad another lock cannot be added.
